Thanksgiving Day

from PURPLE HEARTS by Stephen Bard

/

lyrics

Charlie Skin with one eye
Searchin’ through the trash for a tray every day
Finds his rare prize, cold and half-eaten
Someone else threw away yesterday
And he saw on the television
Looking through the window at The Mill last night
It’s gonna be cold for Christmas

Charlie sleeps down on Montague Street
All the people walk by, that look in their eye
Temperature’s dropping
And everyone’s shopping for their holiday time
All down the line
Charlie can’t feel his toes or his fingers
And he knows he ain’t long for the living
And it’s only Thanksgiving Day

Ain’t it every day I’m just looking away…

A woman rings a bell and people drop in their change
So out of range
Lukewarm soup pours for a group of folks off the street
With nothing to eat but their shoes
Charlie can’t walk to the curb
Let alone to the neighborhood kitchen
And all they ever do is bitch, bitch, bitch

Ain’t it every day I’m just looking away…

And somewhere better
There’s a really warm sweater and a giving tree
But all I think about is me, me, me

Ain’t it every day I’m just looking away…

Charile Skin, they brought him in on Christmas Day
They put him away
No real sin, no next of kin to identify him
Like he never had been...
